  4. thick clouds of suspended material. The
  5. clouds may be dark or light, depending on the
  6. mineral content, thus producing `white
  7. smokers' or `black smokers'. Sea water
  8. percolating through the sediments and crust
  9. is heated in the active area beneath and
  10. dissolves minerals from the hot rocks. As the
  11. charged water is returned to the ocean, the
  12. sudden cooling causes these minerals to
  13. precipitate from solution, so forming the
  14. suspension.
